Click HERE – a nice writeup of me from Kayt Lucas of the Kayt Lucas Band

I have been fortunate enough to get to know Kayt, and she has asked me to back her up on some of her songs. On her recent live streaming contest, I helped her open her show for the first two tunes. She’s also working on doing some of my tunes with me – we’ll see how that turns out – stay tuned.

In the meantime, she is doing some research for a songwriting project, interviewed me, and wrote the following article.

Thanks Kayt!

Once again we have been honoured to join Elana Harte on her M-Factor Mondays shows at The Old Nick. We’ll be playing one kick-ass set somewhere about 8:30 or so.

Another video experimentation with a track off Unassumed Sideroads. This is called Lizard Crossing, because I like lizards, I like seeing them run, and I love the high deserts where you get to see them fairly often. I also shared my home with Al for well over a decade. I rescued Al from unhappy circumstances, and he loved banjo music. Anyway – here it be

Ain’t No Laughing Matter is one of my favourite tunes written by my friend, the late Wayne Sorge. Here’s my official version, from my CD Unassumed Sideroads. I’ve had so many requests for the lyrics for this that I’ve added them to the video, over a slideshow of run down or abandoned buildings in Virginia and South Carolina. The photos were taken by my Friend Joan in Charlottesville – thanks Joan!

Please have a gander and tell me what you think.

Don’t know about you, but I need to party this winter into a distant memory. There are just too many people I didn’t get to see being cooped up in the cold and ice. So on the 28th – remedies shall be had! I want to see your mugs and say hello, and help you wash this winter right out of your boots.

Friday the 28th, at 8:30 after dinner, we will be rocking the roof down at Graffiti’s. We’ve worked up some killer sets, including the legendary one what had ’em pounding the floor at the Old Nick in February. Me, Doc on The Gibson, Neil on sax and bass, and Martha holding down some beats with various percussive mechanicals.

Hope you can make it.

On Monday February 3rd, We have been honoured to be invited back to do a set at Elana Harte’s M-Factor Mondays at the Old Nick. With one set, we’ve compressed a whole night’s worth of goodness into a dozen tunes that will literally blow you away.

A rare east-end appearance for us, so all you East Yorkers and Scarberians get your dancing shoes on for this one! Get out of the house – you’re used to winter now …

Elana is kicking it off with some of her excellent rock, and we’ll be trading sets with Bri-Anne Swan after that. Come early and have a pint while we’re watching Elana.

Hicks on banjos, Dawe on guitar, Kitagawa on sax and bass. No cover.

The fish they swim right past our boats and head on out to sea
They’re racing for the Spanish shore, paella soon they’ll be
The season’s spent, roll up your nets, tar the seams of your scull
Our work is done, it’s time for fun, pick up lads where’s your cheer
We’ll sing Hard Hard Times on Signal Hill
Get roaring drunk in Lachine
Chase the girls in Saskatoon
And thumb our nose at the Queen

Well it’s Saturday night by the full moonlight
Lacing up my dancing shoes
My paycheck’s blown, I can’t get a loan
If you know me – that’s no news
Babe’s set to go, tapping her toes
She wants to get her name in the news
Gonna make a big mess and by dawn I guess
We’ll be singing the Hoosegow Blues

Got my boots, a roll of tools, leathers for the rain
Helmet for where it’s the law, flask for the pain
I’ve taken off the sea shell; laid it on its beaded thong
The one you made me by the coast when I wrote you that song
Doesn’t suit my neck no more, cuts right though my skin
Gonna kick this old bike into life and climb back on the wind
But there you are, standing at the side of the road
There you are, thumb not hanging out
There you are, crying out those cactus eyes
“Stay, let me make it right”

To celebrate New Year’s on the Orthodox calendar, we’ve lined up some special tunes for you. In our own orthodox way, we’ll be playing almost exclusively our own neo-roots material. Our own way, as always.

It will be a warm, cozy night to get away from the frigid howling mess that Toronto has become, and time to raise a pint to spring. You know, the more you come out and have fun, the sooner spring will come. Scientific fact.

Me on banjo, Doc on guitar, and Neil on sax and bass. 3 sets – starting at 9, done by midnight. Hope to see you.
