Hard Times on Signal Hill

There we were, at Graffiti’s Bar & Grill, with my GoPro on a tripod, to see if we could get anything decent off the floor. A cold, dismal, snowy January 29th, 2015 it was. We’ve had way bigger crowds, but we’ve also had smaller. But just the right size for some recording without a stream of people in and out the door behind us.

As it happens, the gear worked. We’ll figure out how to make it better as we go along, but for now, here it be. I’ll be posting more from this night in the weeks to come as I get the time to edit them.

This tune was written by me in 2001/2 after a delightful trip to Newfoundland. Enjoy!

here’s a living room take on a favourite tune from my late friend Wayne. Even the dog liked it – she watched, and then just curled up to listen to us. This is my old friend and mfab Tom Gilmore on harmonica – it’s hard to hear him so we will definitely have to make another recording – he was in fine form. Given how hungover we were, that’s saying something.

Nephew Bill got it on his iPhone, hence the low-res style. But the sound’s pretty good … thanks Bill

Another video experimentation with a track off Unassumed Sideroads. This is called Lizard Crossing, because I like lizards, I like seeing them run, and I love the high deserts where you get to see them fairly often. I also shared my home with Al for well over a decade. I rescued Al from unhappy circumstances, and he loved banjo music. Anyway – here it be

Ain’t No Laughing Matter is one of my favourite tunes written by my friend, the late Wayne Sorge. Here’s my official version, from my CD Unassumed Sideroads. I’ve had so many requests for the lyrics for this that I’ve added them to the video, over a slideshow of run down or abandoned buildings in Virginia and South Carolina. The photos were taken by my Friend Joan in Charlottesville – thanks Joan!

Please have a gander and tell me what you think.

This has long been one of my favourite holiday sings. Written by Tommy Thompson and performed by him with The Red Clay Ramblers, I almost wore the vinyl out (I know I’m dating myself there). I finally got around to learning it properly for the Hicks & Dawe 2013 Holiday Party, and decided it might be nice to record it just very simply with the Gold Tone dojo in my living room. With a little Kraken Spiced Rum, just to ease my vocal cords of course. Hope you like it.

No Exit

Check out this feature video of my song No Exit, which is off my album Unassumed Sideroads. Sometimes we think we have choices to deal with our worries, sometimes we think there can be no exit.

Video shot in the Junction Triangle area of Toronto by Gail Balfour, of Bright Ink Creative Media – thanks much!

how could a banjo player resist – it’s not like we’d have any brains to get eaten …

Wandered down to High Park in Toronto for Sakura hanami. Lots and lots of people about, so I figured I had best climb a tree and throw some notes into the wind to help speed the petals on their way. Watch this short video to get a taste of this tune, called Lizard Crossing, off my Unassumed Sideroads CD.
