Graffiti’s Banner – March 26th, 2015

March 26th – 7 – 10 PM – be there or be square.

We’ve cracked the icicles off our ears, put away the snowshoes, and we’re really going to put some spring in our steps. To celebrate, we’re doing something we’ve never done before, including a bunch of tunes we’ve either never played, or not in some years (and never the way we’re doing them this time). Shorter sets, so more time for gabbing, too. Be buckets of fun.

Come and help us enjoy the balmy breezes in Kensington Market on a Thursday evening. And the fine libations at Graffiti’s. Early start so lots of time to get home and rest up for Friday. One show only – no cover – just party. Make us your spring wakeup.

As usual, we will be joined by the Earl of Bassax hisself, Neil Kitagawa.

Magic Mic Poster #JunctionTO March 7, 2014

Open Mic Poster

I have been asked again to host the Yor Magic Open Mic at the Magic Oven on Keele in The Junction on Saturday, March 7th, from 2 – 6PM.

This has turned into quite the event, with more people trying to sign up than we have time for and more people gathering to listen than we have chairs for.

This week I’ll be accompanied by my good buddy Neil Kitagawa on bass and sax for my small opening bit, and possibly some guitar playing friends for a bit of a jam. After that – we’ve has so many talented performers – musicians, comics, poets, storytellers … I expect it will be quite  the afternoon.

Hard Times on Signal Hill

There we were, at Graffiti’s Bar & Grill, with my GoPro on a tripod, to see if we could get anything decent off the floor. A cold, dismal, snowy January 29th, 2015 it was. We’ve had way bigger crowds, but we’ve also had smaller. But just the right size for some recording without a stream of people in and out the door behind us.

As it happens, the gear worked. We’ll figure out how to make it better as we go along, but for now, here it be. I’ll be posting more from this night in the weeks to come as I get the time to edit them.

This tune was written by me in 2001/2 after a delightful trip to Newfoundland. Enjoy!

Hicks & Dawe at the Old Nick, M Factor Mondays with Elana Harte

The Old Nick – Feb 16, 2015

Monday the 16th, after lazing about for the long weekend, you’re going to want a drink. And I know just where you can get one. And some music to wash away those Monday blues. The Old Nick on The Danforth, that’s where.

Elana Harte has invited us back again to be part of M Factor Mondays, this time with Elana herself kicking it off, of course, followed by the talented Kim Koren and us with sets of our own. The show starts at 7:30.

Steps from the subway, so easy to get to and back from. Another unique lineup of tunes from us, and again we’ll be joined by Neil Kitagawa andMarthalee Aykroyd.

So whether you’re celebrating Louis Riel Day, Islander Day, Family Day, or just Happy Day, come celebrate with us …

We’re almost halfway through winter. We share your suffering. But we can help! And we will. If you come to Graffiti’s this Thursday we’ll warm you up. Guaranteed.

Starting at 7, we’ll be playing three sets of music interspersed with a number of crowd warming activities like watching you drink alcohol. And helping. We’ll be done a bit after 10, so lots of time to get some sleep afore the joys of Friday morning.

Doc and I, joined again by Lost in Sparse – Neil Kitagawa on sax & bass and Martha Aykroyd on percussion and backup vocals. As always a unique set of tunes, never to be heard this way again.

100th person to arrive gets a special door prize…

Graffiti's 14/12/04 PosterOK – it’s on. We’ve got the raffle tickets (free!), and some of the decorations. We’ve got a setlist. Neil has broken out the baritone sax and a pennywhistle. Martha has broken out in harmonies.

By way of saying thanks to those who come out, we’ll have some free giveaways for the raffle like last year, but different, of course. Who knows what – and it’s not too late if you have a suggestion …

We’ve got at least 4 seasonal tunes folded in to the mix, but not ones you hear regularly, if at all. Me on banjos, Doc on guitar, Neil Kitagawa and Martha Aykroyd as Lost in Sparse with horns, bass and percussion.

‘Twas a barrel of fun last year, and will be again. Hope you can make it.

Forget Hallowe’en. Toronto’s mayoral election is far scarier. Oct 27th is the big day. So scary that we’re making sure to be in a place where we can drown our sorrows at the bar and soothe our souls with some great music as the results roll in.

That place is the Old Nick, where we’re honoured to have been invited back by Elana Harte for another M Factor Mondays. We’ve got another kick-ass set of tunes, but quite different than the last one we played there.

We’ll be joined again by the inimitable Lost in Sparse – Marthalee Aykroyd on percussion and Neil Kitagawa on sax and bass.

Please come out – we want to be among friends when the news comes out, and you do too … group hugs may help

7:30 PM (we’ll be on about 8:30 or so)

Don’t know about you, but I need to party this winter into a distant memory. There are just too many people I didn’t get to see being cooped up in the cold and ice. So on the 28th – remedies shall be had! I want to see your mugs and say hello, and help you wash this winter right out of your boots.

Friday the 28th, at 8:30 after dinner, we will be rocking the roof down at Graffiti’s. We’ve worked up some killer sets, including the legendary one what had ’em pounding the floor at the Old Nick in February. Me, Doc on The Gibson, Neil on sax and bass, and Martha holding down some beats with various percussive mechanicals.

Hope you can make it.

Hicks & Dawe at The Old Nick Toronto

Hicks & DAwe at The Old Nick

On Monday February 3rd, We have been honoured to be invited back to do a set at Elana Harte’s M-Factor Mondays at the Old Nick. With one set, we’ve compressed a whole night’s worth of goodness into a dozen tunes that will literally blow you away.

A rare east-end appearance for us, so all you East Yorkers and Scarberians get your dancing shoes on for this one! Get out of the house – you’re used to winter now …

Elana is kicking it off with some of her excellent rock, and we’ll be trading sets with Bri-Anne Swan after that. Come early and have a pint while we’re watching Elana.

Hicks on banjos, Dawe on guitar, Kitagawa on sax and bass. No cover.

A big round of thanks to the many people who filled up Grafitti’s last night. What a great time we had. Still full when we closed up at 10. We played shorter sets so we had more time to chat with friends and patrons. We gave away two Deerslayer mugs, two Hicks & Dawe holiday mugs, and two vintage vinyl – a rare Willie Nelson and The Secret Policemen’s (Other) Ball. Thanks to Marti Aykroyd for helping with the decorations and raffle tickets. We’ll be doing this again for sure. Maybe next time someone will by the band a round without being prompted – it’s thirsty work under the lights …
