Lyrics: Cactus Eyes

Got my boots, a roll of tools, leathers for the rain
Helmet for where it’s the law, flask for the pain
I’ve taken off the sea shell; laid it on its beaded thong
The one you made me by the coast when I wrote you that song
Doesn’t suit my neck no more, cuts right though my skin
Gonna kick this old bike into life and climb back on the wind
But there you are, standing at the side of the road
There you are, thumb not hanging out
There you are, crying out those cactus eyes
“Stay, let me make it right”

I still hear our dancing shoes shuffling on the pier
Your fishing town so full of joy, you so full of fear
Ah your hair smelled of sagebrush and your body felt like home
Your quiet moans a desert breeze, your laugh a sun bleached bone
You don’t belong with nets and fog but you wouldn’t let me in
So I turned my pipes to boil the waves and sail back on the wind
But there you were, standing at the side of the road
There you were, both thumbs hanging out
There you were, begging with those cactus eyes
“Take me West, don’t ever bring me back”

I cleared the seat, pulled you on, rode for the high plains
You left your home, your friends, your job; I thought you’d left your pain
But I was just a foolish boy

Why won’t you love me with those cactus eyes

All my love laid on your wounds hasn’t eased the sting
The living I scratch from this scrub hasn’t meant a thing
For your pain turned to anger, turned to hatred, turned to thirst
Rye whiskey’s your salvation now, to me it’s just a curse
I’m going to find the sea again – she won’t make me explain
I miss the sound of seagulls, hell I even miss the rain
This desert ain’t my home no more, the air just got too thin
This bike’ll kick me back to life, thunder down the wind
And there you are, standing at the side of the road
There you are, your finger pointed up
There you are, screaming out those cactus eyes
“Don’t dare leave and don’t you dare come back”
There you are, screaming out those cactus eyes
